UNTETHERED – Artist Statement
“How much freedom can you handle?” she asked.
Hmm….my first impulse was that I wanted unlimited, infinite freedom. Especially creatively. My soul craves this.
My second impulse was, ohhhhh….that feels kinda scary, can I really “handle” that much freedom? To be “untethered”?
Going wild isn’t necessarily freeing. And restraint isn’t always restrictive.
Perhaps surprisingly, discernment and limits were important for me in creating this body of work. Using a limited palette of colour in each painting, in each glass house, mixing paint in jars, allowing the full range of my movement, from frenetic paint application to thoughtful mark making. Feeling untethered.
Memories of tiny fingers picking raspberries in grandpa’s patch on a blisteringly hot prairie day, followed by an epic thunderstorm that we’d watch coming for miles, feeling the electricity crackling in the air, running for the farmhouse. The imagined and real freedom and ecstasy of wild horses and the once abundant Buffalo that numbered in the millions.
Elemental inspirations from the natural world. Dusty wind storms, tumbleweeds and wide open, endless skies. Thoughts of home, connection, beauty and love…untethered and free.
“Discernment by its very nature creates limits, those limits can pave the inroads to freedom.” D. Laporte
